One island, one functioning system
Lombok sits just east of the Wallace Line, where the wildlife of Asia meets that of Australasia. The Biosphere Reserve treats the island as one system: a strictly protected core around Mount Rinjani and the Samalas caldera, a buffer zone around it, and a transition area where most people live, farm and work.
Under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, the aim is not to fence nature off but to show that conservation and good livelihoods can be planned together.
