The story the Geopark tells
At the heart of the Geopark is the Samalas caldera, left by the eruption of 1257, and Segara Anak lake with the young Barujari cone rising from it. Around them, waterfalls, caves, pumice deposits and volcanic beaches record how the island was built, while Sasak villages and ceremonies show how people have lived with the mountain ever since.
In 2025 UNESCO's evaluators recommended a Green Card, keeping Rinjani-Lombok in the global network for another four years; the certificate was handed over at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in 2026.
